These classes are focused on building conversational communication skills using American Sign Language. CSDHH offers class sessions 4 times each year; Winter, Spring, Summer, and Fall with 3 language levels. Each class session lasts approximately 8 weeks, weather permitting. Classes will meet for two hours once a week in the evening to accommodate any busy work schedule. Our instructors consist of both Hearing and Deaf community members.

Classes are designed for adults. Unfortunately, children under the age of 12 are not able to enroll in our classes. Children 12-15 can enroll with an adult who is also registered, email us to learn more.

  1. How do I register for classes?
    • Students can click here to register online, or  download the registration packet, and mail the attached Registration Form and Payment to our office.
  2. Are children allowed to take these classes?
    • No, these classes are designed for adults.
      • Children under the age of 12 are not able to take these classes
      • Children age 12-15 must attend with an adult who is also signed-up for the same class, and must have filled out the Special Registration Form with parental permission. Contact classes@csdhh.org for more info.
  3. If we have parental permission, can I just drop my 12-15 year old off for class?
    • No, even with the Special Registration Form filled out, students age 12-15 must attend classes with an adult who is also signed-up for class.
  4. What happens in the event of inclement weather?
    • In the event of inclement weather, follow Guilford County Schools:
      • If school is released early - there will be no sign language class that evening
      • If school is cancelled - there will be no sign language class that evening
  5. What happens if a conflict occurs and I cannot attend the class?
    • Full refunds will be given to students who cancel at least 5 business days prior to the first day of class; No refunds will be given after that point.
    • After that point, students may choose to attend classes or defer their registration to a later session
  6. How do I know if a spot has been reserved in the class?
    • As registrations are received in office, we will email to let you know we have received your registration.
    • If you register online, Eventbrite should email you to confirm that your registration was processed.
    • If classes do not reach the minimum required to have class, we will email or phone to let students know

  7. Can I pay in cash when registering for the class?
    • No, if you're mailing/dropping-off your registration, checks or money orders (made out to 'CSDHH' are accepted). If you're registering online, you can use a debit/credit card.
  8. What if I don't know which level I should sign up for?
    • Email classes@csdhh.org, and include any background experience or previous knowledge you have with sign language.
  9. Are these classes for interpreters?
    • No, these classes are designed to provide basic conversational skills and vocabulary.
  10. Who can I contact with any other questions?
  11. Can I bring a friend/family member/partner with me to class?
    • Unfortunately, space in our classes is very limited and we are unable to accommodate guests who are not registered for class.
  12. I am taking these classes for my job. How do I document proof of course completion?
    • While we do not offer training for interpreters nor provide CEUs or other credits, we do provide a certificate of completion for classes as proof of attendance.
  13. My schedule changes often, can I come on Mondays some weeks and Thursdays other weeks?
    • Unfortunately, no. Our classes generally get pretty full, so there’s likely not a seat available on the other night than the one you’re signing up for. Additionally, while the curriculum is the same for both nights, sometimes student questions and size differences mean that on any given week the two classes may not be entirely in sync.
